Why It Matters
King Pins Are What Your Front Wheels Pivot On
On a heavy-duty coach chassis, the king pin is the vertical pin that lets the steering knuckle rotate. Every steering input you make, every pothole on US-19, and the entire front weight of your coach passes through those pins and their bushings.
Neglected, they dry out and wear oval. First you get vague, wandering steering. Then shimmy. Then uneven tire wear that eats a set of very expensive tires. And eventually, king pin and bushing replacement — a serious, expensive job requiring pressing components out of the axle.
Regular greasing is measured in dollars. Replacement is measured in thousands. That's the whole argument.

How often do king pins need greasing?
Most heavy chassis manufacturers call for king pin lubrication annually or every 6,000 to 12,000 miles. If your coach sits a lot in Florida humidity, stay on the annual schedule regardless of miles.
Do they have to be greased with the wheels off the ground?
Ideally, yes. Greasing under full load can prevent grease from reaching the upper bushing. We lift the front end so the grease actually gets where it's supposed to go — that's the difference between doing it and doing it right.
How do I know if mine are worn out?
Wandering steering, shimmy at highway speed, a clunk when turning at low speed, or uneven front tire wear. We measure play against manufacturer specification and show you the number instead of guessing.
