Why It Matters
It's a Second Engine, and You're Ignoring It
Your onboard generator is a complete internal combustion engine with its own oil, filters, plugs, cooling and fuel delivery. It just happens to live in a compartment where you never see it. So it gets forgotten — until you're dry camping in August, the coach hits 94 degrees inside, and the genset won't catch.
Generators also hate sitting. Fuel varnishes, carburetors gum, and the manufacturer's own guidance is to exercise it under load monthly. Most owners run theirs twice a year, for ten minutes, with no load. That's actively bad for it.

How often should I service my generator?
Most manufacturers specify oil service every 100 to 150 operating hours or annually, whichever comes first. Almost nobody hits the hour mark — so treat it as an annual service and you'll be right.
How often should I run it?
Monthly, for about two hours, under real load — run the air conditioning. That keeps seals wet, burns off moisture, and prevents the fuel system from gumming up. Ten idle minutes accomplishes very little.
My generator starts but the AC kicks it offline. What's wrong?
Classic symptom of a generator producing voltage but not usable power — often carburetion, governor, or an aging stator. That's exactly what load testing diagnoses. Bring it in and we'll find it.
